Sturgeon Full Moon Lighthouse Climb
August 22, 2021 @ 6:00 pm
View August’s full moon, the Sturgeon Moon, from the top of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse!
Friends of the St. Clair River’s celebration of the Great Lakes continues with their inaugural Sturgeon Full Moon Lighthouse Climb on Sunday, August 22, 2021 from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse Station Park.
This unique event coincides with August’s full moon, the Sturgeon Moon from Michigan’s oldest lighthouse. The August full moon got its name from Indigenous communities because they knew the sturgeon of the Great Lakes were most readily caught during this full moon.
The Blue Water Indigenous Alliance will share their ecological knowledge through a traditional Drum to share the history and values Lake sturgeon had on their lives. Indigenous Peoples possess a wealth of multi-generational knowledge resulting from lived experiences on the Great Lakes. The threatened Lake sturgeon are a mascot for the Great Lakes and their recovery.
